1. Early Intervention Program: Laying Foundations for a Bright Future
At Fount for Nations, we believe every child deserves the best start in life and that no child should be left behind. Our Early Intervention Program focuses on targeted screenings at under-five clinicslooking to ensure every child undergoes a developmental assessment in the first 1000 days of life. Our growth monitoring and developmental assessments track each child’s progress, allowing us to provide tailored support that meets their unique needs to reduce lifelong challenges significantly.
We emphasize the importance of training health workers to recognize and address developmental delays and disabilities, whilst strengthening referral systems to ensure timely accessto specialized care.By equipping healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills necessary for early identification and intervention, and collaborating with partners and stakeholders for an effective referral system, we are laying the foundations for a bright future for every differently-abled child in Malawi.
2. Community-based Rehabilitation: Building Inclusive Communities
Fount for Nations’ Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) program envisions an inclusive society supported by the collective effort of the entire community. Our Community Interventions include health, education, community empowerment, and social, and livelihood support.
Under health, we bring functional therapy directly to children who need it most, breaking barriers to accessibility due to long distances. Through our trained therapists and community champions, children with disabilities gain access to tailored interventions that enhance mobility, independence, and quality of life.
Our education Interventions focus on sensitization, mobilization, policy advocacy and systems change to foster awareness and understanding of the needs of differently-abled children in the environments they learn. We conduct training sessions and awareness campaigns to educate community members, breaking down stigmas and promoting acceptance.
Additionally, the program empowers families of differently-abled children through implementing the scaling of the Street Business School (SBS) training model, equipping families with the skills to start and manage Microand Small Enterprises sustainably using the resources already existing within the households. We hope this training helps families manage the financial challenges that often come with raising children living with disabilities. These include the cost of frequent medical appointments, specialized equipment, transportation to therapy sessions, and the loss of income when caregivers must forgo employment to provide full-time care
